Gifted Services

LEAP- Gifted Education Hannibal #60 School District
LEAP is an acronym for Logic Enrichment Academic Pursuit.  The program was established in 1985 to serve the academically talented students within the Hannibal School District.  Following guidelines by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, approximately five percent of the student population is provided gifted education services through the LEAP Program, with voluntary participation.

The program is designed to provide a flexible, qualitatively-differentiated curriculum for gifted students which will challenge the individual, allow him/her regular opportunities to interact with intellectual peers, and guide the learner on the road to self-actualization and personal and civic responsibility.

Program Goals

It is the purpose of the LEAP Program to promote cognitive growth and development, creative and critical thinking skills, independent learning and affective development.  Specific objectives in these strands include the following:

  • Develop critical thinking skills (analysis, synthesis, evaluation)
  • Exhibit divergent thinking (fluency, flexibility, original and elaborative)
  • Develop and apply reasoning strategies (inferencing, analogies, deductive and inductive reasoning)
  • Demonstrating responsibility for self-learning and exploration
