Goals and Expectations

bullet

My goals for our class are that “All Students Can Learn” I believe that with hard work, paying attention, good attendance, turning work in on time, and working well with others we will all be successful learners.

On Friday, I send home weekly grades about your child's progress for the week.  I believe it is important that we are in constant contact about your child.  These weekly grades are to be signed and returned to me on Monday.

Please feel free to contact me either by phone (221- 0768) or by e-mail at cjanes@hannibal.k12.mo.us  I check it twice daily and will get back to you as soon as I can.

This year your child has been given a planner or an assignment tablet to keep track of his/her homework.  It will be filled out everyday in class.  It needs to be signed and returned the next day by mom or dad.  Please make sure to check this nightly as I check them the next day to see if they are filled out completely and signed.   Please help hold them accountable for this as I do at school every day.

Reader’s Workshop is one of my favorite classes to teach.  This consists of several pieces.  The largest piece is independent reading.  I have several books in my class for the students to choose from. They are even separated out by genre depending on you child’s likes.

Book clubs is another component.  Students pick from 3 books and they form groups depending on their choice.  They will have jobs to complete and the jobs change with each assignment, which is completed in class.  This is generally led by the students with assistance from me if needed.  The last piece is guided reading.  Each group will meet with me at least 3 times a week; some will meet with me everyday.

This is building wide.  Mark Twain Elementary teachers met to create lifetime words for students K-5.  Each grade level list builds upon each other.  In 4th grade they will be given 5 words the first week of school and then 2 new words each week.  This will be cumulative and by the end of the year they will test over all 72 words.

I do have a behavior log that keeps students accountable for their behavior (this includes not having papers signed, homework completed, bad behavior, and talking).  Each time their name is written in the log they will owe me 10 minutes of recess.  They will owe their time walking laps around the playground.

bullet

We will have a total of 8 computers plus the SMARTBoard.  This will allow for 2 students per computer.

bullet

I also encourage you to read the new Mark Twain Student handbook because many things have changed.  For example the state has adopted a wellness policy.  Please do read this as it will effect what the students can bring for snacks (parties) and in their lunch.

Come by and take a tour our building is looking great!
