Buben Pond Field Trip - Detailed Description

As part of our study of Ecology, our class uses a small spring-fed pond located just off of St. Mary's Avenue as a study site.  This pond is behind Dr. and Mrs. Buben's house and they have generously allowed us to use their pond for a number of years.   Students will travel to and from the site on school buses, and will be gone from school only within the time limits of their Ecology class.  Each Ecology class will visit the pond three times for the labs listed below:

Pond Lab 1 - Observation of the site resulting in a detailed descriptive report.

Pond Lab 2 - Physical Measurements - length, width, perimeter, temp., pH, etc.

*Pond Lab 4 - Plankton sampling - using a plankton net to collect samples for observation.

*For this lab we will also swing by Lake Apollo to collect a plankton sample there.
