About the Teacher
I am a graduate of Hannibal-LaGrange College, with a Bachelor
of Science Degree is Elementary Education, 1991. I received my Family
& Consumer Science degree from Western Illinois University in May,
1999. I obtained my Masters in the Art of Teaching, Curriculum and
Instruction degree in July, 2003. I have been teaching Family &
Consumer Science since 1995.
Course Descriptions
First Semester:
Family Meals-This course is the study of the principles of nutrition;
relationship of nutrition to health and well being; the selection preparation
and care of food; meal management to meet individual and family food needs
and patterns of living; food economics and ecology, and maximizing the
food dollar. Classroom work includes lectures, audio-visual materials,
food labs, and demonstrations. Students will be required to pay
a lab fee.
Contemporary Living-Introductory experiences in all
areas of consumer and family sciences which are designed to help prepare
students for multiple roles as individuals or as family members. Emphasis
is placed on meal planning and preparation, nutrition, basic sewing skills,
parenting, consumer skills, and home management. Classroom work includes
food and sewing labs, lectures, discussion, audio-visual materials, and
demonstrations.
Second Semester:
Housing and Interior Design-This course is the study of the physical,
psychological, and social influences of housing on people; and complex
housing decisions required for creating a desirable environment for living.
Emphasis is given to varied types of housing; costs; exterior and
interior designs; use and care of home furnishings and equipment; and use
of available resources for achieving improved living space to meet individual
and family needs. Classroom work includes tests, readings, field trips,
and a project design.
Family Relations-This course is the study of the nature,
functions, and significance of human relationships within the family/individual
units. This course includes concepts and principals in personal development,
preparation for marriage and parenthood, and establishing and maintaining
a home at each stage of the family cycle. Tests, readings, audio-visual
materials, guest speakers, and class discussions are used to help in understanding
and coping with the family relations.
Child Development-This course presents the study of
children- their physical, mental, emotional, and social growth and development.
Attention is also given to the care and guidance of children. Emphasis
is on the pre-natal period and the pre-school phase of childhood. Classroom
work includes the use of the "Baby Think It Over" simulator, lectures, audio-visual
materials, discussion, and field trips.
Tutoring Times
I am available Monday and Wednesday from 2:35 p.m.-3:00 p.m.
Other times may be arranged by scheduling an appointment.
