Course Descriptions
HANNIBAL HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION POLICIES
EXCUSES: Only a doctor's excuse approved by the office will be accepted
for non- participation.
MEDICAL ABSENCE: If a student must be absent from school for an
extended period of time due to illness or injury, that student wil1 be
given written make-up w'ork to help maintain his/her grade.
GRADING PROCEDURE: All students will be expected to dress out every
day. If a student is not dressed out, they will not participate for
daily credit and w'ill be required to walk. If an excuse for illness or
injury is presented to the instructor, the student involved will not
dress out or participate in activities for that day. The student will
be permitted to officiate,
keep score, keep time, work in the P.E. office, or be required to write
a written report to make up their daily credit. The report will be due
the
next P.E. period or credit will not be given. AN APPROVED EXCUSE OTHER
THAN
THAT OF DOCTOR'S ORIGIN WILL BE GOOD FOR ONLY ONE DAY. In other words,
a
parent signed excuse is good for one day only. Only a doctor's excuse
will
be accepted thereafter.
I. The following grading system will be used in determining your grade:
75% physical participation, effort, and skill; 25% written and/or
skill.
A. Daily Points: Students who are present and dressed for class
accumulate 15 points points may be deducted for lack of participation
and effort, disruptive class participation, unacceptable behavior and
attitude, and jewelry worn.
B. Points will be deducted for wearing the same c1othes in P .E. class
as were worn to school that day. 15 point will be deducted for
the
first nondress or any partial dress. 30 pts. for the second nondress.
60
pts. for the third. 120 pts. for the fourth. and 240 pts. for the fifth
and so on.
C. Sunglasses and hats are forbidden in class. Exception: students may
wear sunglasses outside if sunny. These two items are forbidden in the
gym.
D. Three points will be deducted for each tardy.
E. If a student is absent no more than 5 days of class, a 2 page report
for each absence may be witten as makeup. School sponsored activities
will be excused from doing the report. Report topics can be received
from the
instructor. The student will be given the makeup points if the report
is
of sound quality. The report is due within one week after returning
from
the absence. For absences exceeding 5 days of Physical Education class,
the
student must meet with his/her instructor to discuss work required to
make
up missed daily points. Possible activities could include extensive
research
papers, projects, physical workouts, etc. It is the students
responsibility
to meet with the teacher to receive required work, and the work must be
turned in within a set time period. Physical Education is a
PARTICIPATION
class so attendance is vital. It is understandable that absences are
due
to medical reasons, therefore, if a medical excuse for absence is
presented
to the Physical Education instructor for every absence exceeding 5 days
then
consideration will be taken in regards to makeup work given.
CLASS PROCEDURE: You will be allowed 8 to 10 minutes to dress and be in
your proper place in line for roll and exercises. If you are not in the
proper place and completely dressed w'hen the instructor leaves the
locker room, a tardy will be issued. Be completely dressed. . .. shoes
tied and so on. We will leave activity areas 10 minutes before the end
of the period. Be sure
to lock your va1uables in your locker before leaving the dressing area.
If
you hav'e a large sum of rnoney in your possession for some reason, let
the
instructor lock it in his/her office. After dressing, wait in the
assigned area until the bell rings. All clothes are to be taken home
the last P .E. day of the week and washed. Make sure you have your
c1othes back in your locker
for the next P.E. day. A suggestion is to have an extra set of clothes
in
your locker for those days that you may forget. Never wear anything in
P
.E. class that you wore to school that day.
REOUlRED P.E. CLOTHES: Solid colored T-shirts, shorts, white socks, and
tennis shoes are the required activity clothes. Wear something you can
move
well in. Students will be given a notice by the instructor if their
clothes
are not appropriate. Upon receiving this notice, the student is
expected
to bring different, more suitable clothes the following day.
TARDY POLICY: Tardiness has become a severe problem recently and has
not been taken seriously by the majority of students. Being on time for
class is just as important as being on time for work or any other
function. For this reason, these measures will be taken for tardies. As
mentioned previously, three points will be deducted for each tardy.
The1st tardy will be a verbal warning, plus point deduction. The 2nd
through 5th tardy will receive an after
school detention which will be assigned to serve the following day
after
receiving the detention and the point deduction. On the 6th tardy and
thereafter
an office referral will be issued. After school detentions assigned by
the
teacher are to be served on the next day after receiving the tardy. NO
EXCEPTIONS
will be accepted for not being able to serve the detention unless of
course
emergency reasons arise. Emergency reasons do not include WORK, DOCTOR
APPOINTMENTS,
BABYSITTING, or UNAVAILABLE RIDES HOME. If an after school detention is
not
served, school handbook policy will be followed.
IF A STUDENT DOES NOT HA VE TENNIS SHOES FOR CLASS, HE/SHE WILL RECEIVE
A NONDRESS. NO ONE WILL BE PERMITTED TO DRESS OUT WITHOUT PROPER
FOOTWEAR.
THE USE OF PROFANITY WILL NOT BE TOLERA TED AT ANY TIME. THIS IS
AGAINST SCHOOL POLICY AS WELL AS THE POLICIES OF THIS CLASS.
SODA MUST BE KEPT IN THE LOCKER ROOMS. CANS SHOULD BE DEPOSITED IN
DESIGNA TED TRASH CANS AND MAY NOT BE CARRIED UP ON THE GYM FLOOR OR
OUT OF THE
BUILDING.
AFTER SCHOOL DETENTIONS MAYBE ASSIGNED FOR TARDINESS, EXCESSIVE
NONDRESSES,
MISBEHAVIOR IN CLASS, or other DISCIPLINARY REASONS. DETENTIONS NOT
SERVED WILL BE HANDLED AS MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY IN THE TARDY SECTION.
ABSENCE REPORT TOPICS
For absences of 5 days or less, a 2 page handwritten report or 1 page
double-spaced, typed report must be written for each absent day to
receive daily credit. The report is due within a week of being absent
to receive full credit. A different topic must be chosen for each
absence. The topic must be researched thoroughly and the report written
in the student's own words. Graphics can not be counted in page length
requirements. A list of sources must be included at the end of the
report as to where the information was found. Throughout the student's
physical education career at Hannibal High School, report topics cannot
