The health and safety of children and staff are of paramount importance to the Hannibal School District.  Therefore, the temperature is closely monitored, especially in non-air-conditioned schools throughout hot days.

Criteria for Early Dismissal

The weather forecast will be reviewed using multiple sources (National Weather Service/AccuWeather) on a regular basis.  Although many factors will be taken into consideration when making decisions, one will be when the heat index reaches 95 degrees.

The decision to have early dismissal will be made by the Superintendent as soon as possible, but no later than 11:00 a.m.  The following early dismissal plan for students will be implemented at the non-air-conditioned buildings.

  • Early dismissal will apply to all non-air-conditioned buildings (HMS/HHS).

  • Parents will be notified via School Reach as well as through local media.

  • Dismissal will be at 12:30 p.m. for Hannibal High School.

  • Dismissal will be at 12:55 p.m. for Hannibal Middle School.

  • Lunch will be served prior to early dismissal.

  • Bottled water will be provided to students who ride school buses home.

  • In the event that school should dismiss early due to heat, all athletic/activity practices will be moved back starting no sooner than

6:00 p.m.

Principals will maintain a routine for relief on hot days that includes rotating classes through air-conditioned areas of the building.

In the event that school is dismissed early due to heat, staff members are expected to work a full contractual day, but are encouraged to locate to a cool place within the building to work.

The school campuses with air-conditioning will remain in session for the full day.  However, there will be no outdoor recess if the heat index is 95 degrees or above.

Other Preventative Measures

The following preventative measures will and should be taken to help maintain a comfortable educational environment for our students and staff.  They are:

  • Custodians will open windows early in the morning and turn on all fans to improve air movement within the buildings.

  • Keep shades closed on the side of the building receiving the most sunlight.

  • Keep overhead lights to a minimum if possible.

  • Turn off any electronic equipment that is not in use.

  • Students will be allowed to bring water bottles to remain properly hydrated throughout the day.
