Albert David Stowell was born September 3, 1855, in Henry County, Northern Illinois.
The subjects that were the most important to him were math, history English, psychology, pedagogy, and school management.
Stowell came to Hannibal in the fall of 1888, after years of teaching, to become the principal of the South School.
As principal, Stowell modernized music, domestic science, manual training, and the organization of savings bank system.
In the later years of his principalship, Stowell helped to organize the South Side Improvement Association, which was the forerunner of the present Parent-Teacher Association. This organization helped the principal and teachers in raising the money for the Chickering grand piano, which Stowell considered one of the schools greatest accomplishments.
Mr. Albert David Stowell, after serving as principal for 25 years, had helped to raise the efficiency of the school to a high standard. Such was his influence upon the community, that 10 years after he resigned, and almost 3 years after his death (1921), a large group of the citizens of this ward petitioned the Board of Education to name the school building as a memorial to this principal.
The South School would now be known as A.D. Stowell Elementary School.
