Mark Twain Elementary was built in 1903 with
additions constructed in 1925 and 1968. There is about 43,000 square feet and it serves the children of west central Hannibal. Mark Twain has a student population of 280 and a professional staff of 24 teachers. In addition to the core subject curriculum, programs are offered in Music, Art, PE and Library and support programs for Learning Disabilities, Speech/Language, Reading Recovery, Title I, and Counseling. School day begins at 8:30 and continues through 3:15. Breakfast and lunch programs are available to all students. Classes are self-contained through 2nd grade, with team teaching. The Guided Reading Program is implemented beginning in kindergarten, with all grades incorporating literature based reading instruction. A strong phonics based reading program supports the guided reading program in the early primary grades. Writing is a component of all areas of the curriculum. All students keep daily journals. There is an active PTO and a very supportive parent volunteer group. MOTTO MISSION STATEMENT BELIEFS Mark Twain Elementary School is a student-centered environment. The faculty sets high expectations and provides learning opportunities for all students. Student success and citizenship are the shared responsibility of the students, parents, school staff, and community. Students are treated with respect and are valued as individuals with diverse needs. All faculty and staff are positive role models. Academic and social skills are developed within the curricula.
