Mrs. Tuck's Class: Pinehurst Primary School, Cape Town, South Africa -

Class Pictures

Dear Water Participants

We are Grade 4 pupils from Pinehurst Primary in South Africa. Our teacher is Mrs Tuck. Here is some information about us.

GROUP 1: WATER WARRIORS (Robert, Rory, Adrian, Daniel, Jordan)

Hi, we live in South Africa on the continent of Africa. The town we live in is Cape Town and we live in a suburb called Pinelands. Pinelands has lots of trees. We go to Pinehurst Primary School. We wear a school uniform. We have a high standard of education and our sport is excellent. Some of the sports our school offers are cricket, swimming, netball and hockey. Pinehurst is a co-ed school. The teachers are strict but also kind. Some of our subjects include Natural Science, History, Geography, Maths and Afrikaans.

Did you know that Pinelands was the first Garden City in South Africa? Cape Town is at the foot of Table Mountain. One of the islands that are visible from Cape Town is Robben Island, where our ex-president Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for many, many years. Bobotie is a traditional South African food. Babotie is a mince with raisons topped with an egg and milk mixture. It is nice on rice.

South Africa is a popular place for holidays and for tourists. We also have many different kinds of wildlife, but animals don't roam around just everywhere as some people think they do. They can be found in zoos and game parks or nature reserves all over South Africa. In South Africa there are 11 official languages spoken. We learn Xhosa, Afrikaans and English at school. Some schools offer other languages such as French and German - but mostly in high schools. Do you know that Johannesburg is the capital city of South Africa? Can you believe that many, many years ago, Cape Town was under water!

GROUP 2: WATER DUDES (Darryn, Matthew, Steven, Justin, Mark)

Hi, Pinelands is the oldest garden suburb in South Africa. There are lots of pine trees in Pinelands and quite a few parks. There is one shopping centre in Pinelands called Howard Centre. Many houses in our area have thatched roofs. There is a long canal that runs through Pinelands. Did you know that years ago Pinelands had a flood? Has your area ever experienced a disaster? There are 4 primary schools in Pinelands and 1 high school. Pinelands is generally a very quiet place and you will find many squirrels where we live.

All of us enjoy playing cricket and we really think South Africa is beautiful place to live in. Do you have a Spur or Kentucky Fried Chicken where you live? What foods do you eat? What kinds of sport do you like? What is your favourite music to listen to?

GROUP 3: CRAZY WATER KIDS (Michael, Chad, Jessica, Stephanie, Laura)

I am Michael. I like chicken. I have two dogs and I have two sisters.
I am Chad. I have three brothers and one sister.
I am Jessica. I have one sister. I have two dogs, two birds and two rabbits.
I am Stephanie (Steph). I have a crazy sister and a nice cat.
I am Laura. I have a dog and a cat. I also have a big brother. I enjoy extreme sports like wall climbing and roller blading. I also enjoy ice skating.

At our school we have tennis courts, a cricket pitch and netball court. We also have a swimming pool and a computer room. Some of our school subjects include Maths, Spelling, Natural Science, Life orientation, Economic and Management Science, IT and Art. The symbol of our school is the acorn which is represented on our school badge. Some of the sports at Pinehurst include tennis, athletics, basketball and choir. Our teacher is strict but funny and nice. There is another Grade 4 teacher named Miss Janes and she is also strict but nice.

Did you know that Sir Richard Stuttaford founded Pinelands. He got the idea of the creation of Garden Cities by Sir Ebenezar Howard who was from England. Pinelands used to be called Uitvlugt. It was covered in Pine and Wattle trees. Did you know that the British Army used Uitvlugt (Pinelands) as a military camp during the Anglo-Boer war? And did you know that they used camels and mules? It turns out that the only well known living history around here in a short time will be the Wattle trees, because Pine trees are in fact alien plants. The first house in Pinelands was number 3 Mead Way, built in 1922.

South Africa is the southern most point of Africa which is boarded by the Indian and Atlantic Ocean. Did you know that we are on a Peninsula? A peninsula is a piece of land which is surrounded by water on three sides, unlike an island which is completely surrouned by water. Did you know that Cape Agulhas is the southern most point of Africa?

On the whole, South Africa has the widest range of animals. The elephant, lion, buffalo, rhino and leopard are known as the big five.

The SA rugby team is (at the moment) still represented by the springbok. The SA Cricket team is represented by the protea, which is our country's national flower. Our national bird is the Blue Crane.

Nelson Mandela was the first black president of South Africa. Some of our tourist attractions are Robin Island, Table Mountain, Kruger National Park and winefarms of the Western Cape. The Garden Route, along the southern coast of SA is also well-known. In South Africa we have a number of festivals which include culture and arts, the whale and oyster festivals. On Monday next week, 22 March, we have a public holiday called Human Rights Day.

GROUP 4: SEAWEED GIRLS (Tania, Simone, Samantha, Namisa, Siphokazi)

Although we go to school in Pinelands, we don't all live in Pinelands. Tania is new at our school and comes from Mauritius but now lives in Pinelands. Tania is French-speaking. Namisa comes from Durban and her home-language is Zulu. Samantha lives in Newlands. Siphokazi lives in Summer Greens.

Namisa has been living in Pinelands for 7 years. Sam has been living in Newlands for over a year. Tania has been living in Pinelands for over 5 months, Simone has been living in Pinelands for over 3 years. Sam, Simone and Namisa were all born in South Africa and Tania was born in Mauritius.

Did you know? - In 1935, Cape Town tried to take over Pinelands.

- In 1967, Pinehurst Primary (our school) was built.

- South Africa is known as the Rainbow Nation.

GROUP 5: WATER BOYS (Azhar, Aziz, Siyabonga, Mbongeni, Danian)
Our favourite foods are pizza and braai (barbecue). Our favourite subject is Maths.

Did you know that South Africa is celebrating its 10th year of democracy. In Cape Town, we have a mediterranean climate, which is hot, dry summers and cold, wet winters. There are two oceans surrounding South Africa, the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. What can you tell us about your country? What's your favourite food? Is your school big? Do you go to school in civvies?

GROUP 6: WATER BABES (Gladys, Joy, Jasmin, Danielle, Catherine)

We are all girls. We all do swimming and love water! Gladys is the leader, Jasmin is kind and a good friend, Joy is sweet too and Danielle is full of attitude (smiley), Catherine is friendly and very smart.

Pinelands is a quiet suburb with parks and trees. Our seasons are: December to February - Summer; March to May - Autumn; June to August - Winter; and September to November - Spring.

Cape Town is located very near the tip of the Peninsula. We have beaches that are very nice and we have rockpools. We start school at 7: 55 and end at 2:20. On Wednesdays we end school at 1:20 and on Fridays we end at 1:50. We have two breaks during the day. One is for 15 minutes and the other for 20 minutes. We have extra-mural activities each day of the week, after school. In winter we don't get snow. Sometimes snow occurs on mountains high up, but we seldom see snow othewise. Our school often goes on outings and camps. We hope you have enjoyed reading about us and our beautiful country, South Africa. We look forward to all we are going to be learning from each other this year.

The Water Participants from Cape Town, South Africa.

Mr. Grimes' Class: Indianapolis, Indiana USA -- Burkhart Elementary

We welcome you to Burkhart Elementary School. We are located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our Address is 5701 Brill Road. We have approximately 400 students. We use LCD screens and we just received new computers. We use laptops for PowerPoint. We have eight fifth grade gifted and talented students. These students are responsible for this water project.

Our longitude is 39.675 and our latitude is: 86.129817. We have an outdoor classroom, which includes a pond. We are doing the water project in Buck Creek, which is located in our school woods. There used to be a wooded area beside our school. That is now a commercial area.

We use our computers to download information for reports, and for pictures for reports. We use Mr. Grime's laptops for shows on our big projects for science. We have a new large group instruction room with a projection system for video and data.

Our website is http://hb.msdpt.k12.in.us/. There is a picture of our school on the homepage of our website. If you go to our website and click on Fifth Grade, you will see the link for the water project there. We will be adding more information about our project and how we do it. It will be under Buck Creek Project. You could also get some information on our different units that we do here at Burkhart.

During our project we have different groups such as biological, chemical and measurement. Last year we came as fourth grade students in GT, and had a wonderful time helping the fifth grade with the water project. We are going to try to get out to the creek at least once or twice this year. We are very pleased to be working alongside you. This will be an exhilarating experience. Many do not get the chance to do this. We are happy to be able to learn things about the creek in the woods We will be assisting Mr. Grimes and our fifth grade class with the equipment and the studies on the creek. Last year we worked on all of this, but this year we will be using new equipment, which will save us much time and make our information more accurate.

We hope you enjoy working with us,

The GT students:
Rachel, Dylan, Kelsey, Alex, Jamie, Kameron, Daulton, Chandlar

Mr. Gellner's Class -- Terrace, British Columbia, Canada -- Thornhill Primary School

Hi everyone,

We are a class of twenty-three students in grade two at Thornhill Primary School. We have thirteen boys and ten girls in our class. Our school goes from kindergarten to grade three. We have nine computers in our classroom. Two computers are usually hooked up to the Internet for writing and searching for information. We have a scanner in our classroom and an overhead projector. We have access to a digital camera. We also have access to digital display for presentations and whole class sharing. Our school day starts at 8:35 A.M. and ends at 3:15 P.M. We have a four-day week this year. We are attending school from Mondays to Thursdays. There is no school on Fridays except if there is a holiday on Monday or Tuesday. Our school year started on September 2 and ends on June 29 for students.

We are located in the northwestern part of British Columbia, Canada near the city of Terrace. Terrace is 54 degrees 28 minutes North and 128 degrees 28 minutes West. Our northern location gives us longer summer days and shorter winter days. (Our longest day is 19.1 hours and our shortest day is 8.8 hours.) Kitimat and Prince Rupert (our next closest cities) are located on the Pacific Ocean.

Our climate is a mix of coastal and interior. There is lots of rain and snow. ) We live on the edge of the rainforest here. The heaviest rainfall for Terrace was 114.8 mm and the heaviest snowfall was 99.1 cm. The heaviest snowfall for one day in our region was at Lakelse Lake. There was 118.1 cm of snowfall on January 17, 1974.

Terrace is one of the resource centres for the logging and mining industry in the Pacific Northwest. It is also a tourist area for fishing, camping and hiking. Our area is famous for salmon and steelhead fishing. Terrace once held the world record for spring salmon (over 92 pounds.) in the Skeena River. The Skeena River is the largest river in our area. There are lots of trout in our lakes and streams. The oceans are famous for very large halibut and all types of salmon. Killer whales, also known as Orca, can be seen in the ocean. Grey whales migrate in the ocean here in the spring and summer.

Our spring has been very mild this year. The snow has melted in most areas except for the mountains and the higher elevations. Our Shames Mountain Ski Hill will be closing soon. Our Skeena Valley Golf Course has recently opened. The ice on many of our lakes has melted. Many of the oolichan runs have all ready started in some of our larger rivers, the Nass, the Skeena, the Kemano and the Kitimat. Many bald eagles can be seen along the rivers now. There are also many gulls and sea lions near the mouths of the rivers following the oolichan fish, a very oily fish related to smelts. Many of the First Nations make an oolichan grease or paste and some smoke and dry them too.

There is lots of wild life near our area. Many moose, foxes, coyotes, snowshoe rabbits, and grouse can be seen outside of town right now. Trumpeter swans, Canada geese, loons, and many types of ducks have returned to some lakes. Our black bears and grizzly bears are just starting to wake up! Terrace's symbol is the Kermode Bear. It is a very rare white variation of black bear found in some of the forests around here. One in ten black bears here have a special gene that produces a white bear - not an albino. Land has been set aside for some Kermode bears - in an area called "The Great Bear Rainforest". "Kermodie" Bears have also been called "Spirit Bear" by some First Nation¹s people living here as well as others.

There are many different totem poles carved in our area. We have one at our school. There are several totem poles around our area. Most totem poles are carved in yellow or red cedar. We¹ll send some pictures soon.
