The Hannibal High School Jazz Band
Visits Eugene Field
January 17, 2007

The Jazz Band demonstrated slow, medium, and fast tempos.
Jazz Band leader, Jeff Nelson, challenged students to notice solos and musical changes.
Kids heard various compositions including the work of Duke Ellington.

Mr. Nelson asked the musicians to demonstrate high and low sounds.

Fluttering your lips into the mouthpiece and pushing the valves makes the sound on a trumpet, according to Mr. Nelson.

Students learned that the saxophone is actually a woodwind instrument because a vibrating reed make in the mouthpiece makes the sound.

Andrew Ouellette on piano made the Missouri All State Jazz Ensemble.

Students interviewed Mr. Nelson to write a report about the Jazz Band.
