LO 2
Soup ‘N Such Café
Formative Assessment:
Ask students:
What does the
word transformation mean to you?
What would
transforming figures in math mean?
How could we
slide, flip and turn a figure?
Instructional Strategies
or Activities:
1.
Discuss and
demonstrate the flip, slide, and turn geometric transformations.
2.
Provide tag
board cut-out shapes for the students to practice slides, flips, and turns.
3.
Provide verbal
reminders of how the transformations work:
Slide -
Have them picture themselves sliding down a slide. They look the same and are
still right-side up - all that has changed is their location.
Flip -
Have them imagine cooking a pancake. You cook one side and then pick it up,
flip it over and cook the other.
Turn -
Have then imagine they are playing basketball and need to pivot. They hold one
foot in place and turn their body.
4.
Have the
children look around the room and beyond to find examples of how these
transformations are used to create patterns and designs.
5.
Distribute
letters and activity.
Soups 'N Such Activity
It's
Tuesday
When a customer walks in and ruins everyone's day.
It's old Mr. McGruder with a frown on his face
As he walks towards his table at a slow, steady pace.
For old McGruder as everyone knows,
Is fussy and picky from head to toe.
"This is too hot or too cold or too spicy!!!
My drink is too warm and my food is icy!!!"
Everyone runs to hide to avoid the task
Of being the one who has to ask........
"May I take your order, PLEASE????"
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
You knew this wasn't going to be your day when your mom fixed her "special" oatmeal for breakfast but nothing prepared you for this!!! The job of waiting on Mr. McGruder falls on you and you approach his table with dread.
He orders alphabet soup which seems easy enough but as you begin to walk away be calls you back with some special instructions.
"I'll
take that soup," he says with a grin,
"but I want only certain letters to be put in."
"They must look the same after a slide, turn, AND flip.
So find only those letters before I take a sip."
With a worried frown you head for the kitchen to begin sorting alphabet soup
letters. You wonder if Hugh's Hamburger Haven needs help ....
Soups 'N Such
1. Use the letter cut-outs to determine which letters look the same after a flip, slide, or turn. (Mr. McGruder will be satisfied with either a horizontal or vertical flip and with any turn.) Complete the chart below.

2.
Based on his rule that only letters which look
the same after a flip, slide, and turn may be in his soup, which letters should
you select for the picky gentleman's lunch?

Summative Assessment:
Evaluation is conducted informally through teacher
observation as the students conduct the activity. Their answers to the activity
questions will provide a more formal evaluation.
The style of type used determines which letters work. The
answers below are based on using the letters attached to this lesson.
Same after a slide: Letters in this category have translational
symmetry. All letters work.
Same after a flip: Letters in this category have reflectional or line
symmetry. The line of symmetry may be vertical or horizontal.
A B C D E H I M O T U V W X Y
Same after a turn: Letters in this category have rotational symmetry.
The letter will look the same after a turn of 180 degrees or less.
H I N O S X Z
So, since only letters in all 3 lists go in the soup, only O, H, I, and X will
be in the soup.
