A River Remembered

Formative Assessment:

·         Why were the rivers important to early Missourians?

·        How are rivers important to Missourians today?

·        What is likely to happen to a river if the population of a river city increases considerably?

Instructional Strategies or Activities:

Read to the class the book A River Ran Wild by Lynne Cherry.  Students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between human activities and the impact of those activities on a natural resource, the Nashua River.  Students will examine changes in the river over time and work in cooperative groups to sequence these changes.  They will participate in a town meeting and make a decision about building a factory on the banks of the Nashua River.

 Summative Assessment:

Observe students to see if during participation they understand how important rivers were to early Missourians and then to predict further consequences to the river.
