Formative Assessment:

·         What did the Native Americans do with the buffaloes they killed?

·        Why did the buffalo disappear?

·        What was the impact of the disappearance of the buffalo on the native community?

·        How are buffalo being saved today?

Instructional Strategies or Activities:

Students will work together on a collaborative project in order to gain a better understanding of why “The Buffalo” was such an important aspect of a native community.  Students will gather information and store it in a common database and shared file for future use.  Each team of students will build a portion of the presentation.  This project will include the following topics:  (a) interesting facts, (b) buffalo hunters, (c) hunting the buffalo, (d) from head to foot, (e) why the buffalo disappeared, (f) impact on the native community, (g) saving the buffalo.

Tell the class that they have been asked by the Mark Twain Museum to produce a computer slide show on the importance of “The Buffalo” to a native community, as well as how “The Buffalo” contributed to Missouri’s history and development.  They will be working with a partner and will be expected to research, input data into a database file, produce a computer slide show and give an oral presentation.
