Missouri’s Geography

Formative Assessment:

·        What are the important cities in Missouri?

·        Where are each of these cities located in Missouri?

·        What are Missouri’s two most important rivers and where are they located?

Instructional Strategies or Activities:

Students will use a salt-clay dough to form the shape of Missouri and show the important cities and the Mississippi River and Missouri River.

Materials Needed:

Each student will need to bring a 10” X 12” piece of plywood or heavy cardboard,

1 cup flour, and

½ cup salt

The teacher will provide ten toothpicks for each student and ten ½” X 1 ½” pieces of paper or colored construction paper.

Five or six blue markers should also be provided for sharing among the students.

Each student’s flour and salt will need to be mixed together with approximately ½ cup water.

When mixed, each student is to shape their salt-clay dough into the shape of Missouri on their board or cardboard.

When finished, the students will need to use their toothpicks to make little flags (glue a piece of paper at the end of a toothpick).

Each student will next label the flags as follows:  Mississippi River, Missouri River, St. Joseph, Hannibal, Kansas City, Columbia, Jefferson City, Springfield, St. Louis, and Ste. Genevieve.

The city “flags” are then inserted in the clay map at the appropriate place where each city is located.  The flags identifying the two rivers should also be located in the approximate places.  When the clay is dry the student will draw the path of the two rivers with the blue markers.
