Tumbling Towers

 

 

Formative Assessment:

 

1.      Have you ever tried to build a tower from blocks?

2.    Do you know what an architect does?

3.    Do you know who uses the architect’s plans to build the structure?

4.    Would it be important to be able to understand and follow the architect’s plan before building the structure?

 

Instructional Strategies or Activities:

 

1.      Inform children that they have been hired by an architect to build some towers.  They will follow the architect’s plan to build them correctly.

2.    Each child receives colored blocks or cubes – 2 red, 2 blue, 2 yellow, and 1 green.

3.    Each child also receives the architect’s plans as follows:

Tower A   1.  The yellow cube is not at the bottom.

   2.  The blue cube is not between the 

        green cube and the red cube. 

   3.  The green cube is between the yellow   

        cube and the blue cube.

                     

 

                                   4.  The red cube is above the yellow cube.

 

    Tower B  1.  The red cube is somewhere below                             

              the green cube.

              2.  The blue cube is somewhere above the  

                    yellow cube.

              3.  The top cube is not blue.

              4.  The cube directly below the green cube 

                    is red.

4.  Children build the towers, following the instructions above.

5.  Children use a recording sheet to draw and color their finished towers.

 

Summative Assessment:

 

1.      The teacher will observe students use of logical reasoning as they attempt to follow the plan.

2.    The teacher will collect and assess the student’s recording sheet for accuracy of the tower.
