Roman Numeral Fun

Formative Assessment:

          Are all numbers the same?

          What is a Roman Numeral?

Where in your home would you see Roman Numerals?

Instructional Strategies or Activities:

Introduce the Roman Numerals I, II, III, V, X, L, and C.  Explain what they mean and how numbers are written.  Make a set of Roman Numeral values from I to C.  Have students draw a card and count the value and say the number.  When students become familiar with Roman numerals, divide class in half.  Have two students each draw a card.  Compare the numbers using greater than and less than.

In groups of 4 or 5 each student draws a card.  The group orders the numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least.

Summative Assessment:

Have students write the value of the common Roman numerals.
