Highlighting Patterns on a Hundreds Grid

Formative Assessment:

Can you use a word processor to find patterns in numbers on a grid?

How do patterns help you with math?

Instructional Strategies or Activities:

Students will create a table in Word and keyboard in numbers to make a hundreds grid.  After the grid is completed, the students will highlight multiples of a specified number.  For example:  highlight all the multiples of 2 in yellow.

1.     Have the students create Hundreds Grid in Microsoft Word.

a.      Open Word

b.     Click on Table – Insert table – Number of columns 10 – Number of rows 10- click ok

c.     Type the number 1-100 in the cells using the Tab key to move from cell to cell.

d.     Click on Edit – Select All – Change font size to 28 and center the numbers.

2.     After the grid is created have the students select a number from 2-9.  The students will then highlight the multiples of that number and click on the highlight icon and pick a color to highlight each multiple.

3.    The students will then select a number from 2-9 and use the font color icon to repeat the process.

4.    After a teacher-chosen number of numbers are highlighted, the students will need to analyze the patterns shown by the different colors.

5.    Students will then type what they learned about patterns and multiples under their grid and print their document.

Summative Assessment:

The teacher checks the printed hundreds gird to see that the correct numbers were highlighted.  The teacher reads the student writing about what they learned from the hundreds grid to check for understanding.
