Valentine Combinations

Formative Assessment:

        What is a number sentence?

What combinations can you think of that total 10, 11, 12

         etc.?

Instructional Strategies or Activities:

Give each student an 8 1/2 X 11 sheet of paper.  On the top half have two Valentine hearts drawn and on the bottom have three Valentine hearts drawn.  Pass out fourteen Valentine candy hearts to each student.  Use the overhead to show students how to begin making combinations of two addends that equal fourteen.  Write each combination on the overhead.  Make sure to explain different order doesn’t mean a new combination.  ( 1 + 13 or 13 + 1)  When all combinations have been made and written on the overhead, have students work individually or with a partner to find all the combinations of three that will equal 14.  Be sure they write each combination on their paper.

Summative Assessment:

When students have had enough time, write all the combinations on the overhead. Discuss the strategies they used to find combinations.  Then have students write about what they learned.
