Variable Pencil Purchasing Patterns

Formative Assessment:

How much does a pencil cost?

How many different combinations of coins equal 35 cents?

Instructional Strategies or Activities:

Give a group of students a bag of mixed coins, 9 pencils, and a 2X4 grid. Then model how to represent the cost of one pencil. Have the students investigate, discover, (using the grid sheet), and display the costs of 2,3,4 pencils, etc…

Summative Assessment:

Observe the students during the activity to make sure the pattern is complete.

Have the students write a sentence explaining what pattern(s) they discovered.
