Formative Assessment:
What kinds of graphs have we used in our
classroom?
What are the parts of a graph?
When do we see circle graphs?
Instructional Strategies or Activities:
Explain to students they are going to make a circle graph using the color of M & M’s as their data. First have students predict how many M & M’s they think will be in each bag and which color of M & M they will have the most of. Write these predictions on chart paper. Each student needs one small bag of M & M’s, 2 nine inch paper plates, ruler, pencil, and crayons or markers. Have students count and then sort by color their M & M’s. Compare actual results with the predictions on the chart paper. Discuss why bags have different total amounts and different amounts of each color. Then have students fold the first paper plate into fourths to find the center of the graph. Place the folded paper plate over the second plate and poke a hole to find the center. Have students place the M & M’s one color at a time around the edge of the circle. When finished mark with a pencil where one color ends and the next begins. Lightly mark on the edge each color. Use a ruler and draw from the center to the edge for each color. Color in each pie with the correct M & M color. EAT the M & M’s.
Summative Assessment:
Write and answer 5 questions about the graph.
Construct a different graph using the same data.
