LO4
Formative Assessment:
What is mental math? Why is it important? What is one place you could use mental math?
Play Around the World with fact families for a
warmup.
Instructional Strategies or Activities:
Divide students into pairs. Each pair needs dice, one note card, and a pencil. The first student rolls the dice and computes the sum. His/her partner marks one tally. Player one continues to roll and add the sums to the previous sum. The partner tallies each roll. Student one rolls and adds to 100 without going over. Players trade and do the same thing. The student who gets closest to 100 with the fewest possible tallies is the winner.
Summative Assessment:
Class discussion will follow. Was there a strategy to win? Have students write about the process.
