Trains Show Expanded Place Value

Formative Assessment:

What is place value?  What does this mean to you?  How does place value make a difference?  (Give examples.)  (How are 34 and 43 alike?  How are they different?)

Instructional Strategies or Activities:

Teacher models expanded form place value on board or overhead.

        (Example) 4,328 = 4000 + 300 + 20 + 8

*Since the number has 4-digits, you must show all 4 place values.  After the teacher gives examples, group the students in small group of 3-4 students each.  Groups are provided with 3 or 4 digit numbers and train car cut-outs for each place value.  Students show each place value on a separate train car and then arrange the cars accordingly.  When finished, each group takes turns sharing their numbers in expanded form using their “trains.”  Repeat activity as time allows.

Summative Assessment:

Observe students during activity to make sure their trains match their given number.
