Paper Plate Place Value

Formative Assessment:

*      Read aloud How Much Is a Million.  Have a class discussion about how much a million would be.  Help students get accustomed to larger numbers by asking questions like:

1.      If you had 10 pennies would you have a lot of money.

2.      Could 100 students fit into your classroom?

3.      Could you eat 1000 dips of chocolate ice cream in one day?

Instructional Strategies or Activities:

Place the numerals 0-9 on ten different paper plates.  Give students a plate with a number on it.  Begin the activity by saying:

1.      Whoever has the 1 stand in the tens place.

2.      Whoever has the 9 stand in the hundred thousands place.

3.      Whoever has the 6 stand in the millions place.

Continue adding placeholders until the number is complete.  Have a student not in the number say the number.

Continue the activity by changing students and making new numbers.

Variations;

1.      Students at their desks could use dry erase boards to write the number as it is called out.

2.      Use the overhead to write the number.

3.      Do not use the 0 and leave placeholders blank so students know 0 goes there.

4.      Have students in the number say the value of that place. (23,569- the 2 is worth 20,000)

Summative Assessment:

Observation of students during the activity.
