Subtraction with a Zero

Formative Assessment:

What is a zero worth in a number? When you see a zero in addition, what do you do with it? When you see a zero in subtraction what now happens?

Instructional Strategies or Activities:

Use index cards with different numbers on them.

Students will participate as a number

Add the numbers first.

Then direct to demonstrate a subtraction problem.

How is the zero dealt with?

In each column?

What is it worth?

From groups of one/ten/hundred, they demonstrate how the numbers would be traded. They would do this in place value order.

Write an explanation of how they knew to do the steps.

Meet at place value group to compare.

Summative Assessment:

Observe the students during the activity to make sure the demonstration matches the direction.
