Subtraction with a Zero

 

 

Formative Assessment:

 

          What is a zero worth in a number?  When you see a zero in addition, what do you do with it?  When you see a zero in subtraction what now happens?

 

Instructional Strategies or Activities:

 

*    Use index cards with different numbers on them.

*    Students will participate as a number

*    Add the numbers first.

*    Then direct to demonstrate a subtraction problem.

*    How is the zero dealt with?

*    In each column?

*    What is it worth?

*    From groups of one/ten/hundred, they demonstrate how the numbers would be traded.  They would do this in place value order.

*    Write an explanation of how they knew to do the steps.

*    Meet at place value group to compare.

 

Summative Assessment:

 

*    Observe the students during the activity to make sure the demonstration matches the direction.
