Formative Assessment:
Ask each student to write three items they would
like to purchase at Wal-Mart that cost $25.00 or less. Students can share them with a partner.
Instructional Strategies or Activities:
Explain to students that they have $25.00 to spend at Wal-Mart on anything they wish, but they must follow these guidelines:
1. You must purchase at least 3 items, but no more than 5 items.
2. Each item must cost at least $1.00.
3. The total cost of all items must be between $22.00 and $25.00.
Pass out Wal-Mart flyers to each student. They will then use the flyer to find the items they want to purchase.
When students have calculated their purchases they can design a poster showing the items and the cost of each. Total cost will then be calculated.
Bonus; Have students determine the amount of change they would receive from their $25.00 and show the fewest amount of dollars and coins they would get back.
Summative Assessment:
Partner students and have them check computations with a calculator.
