Formative Assessment:

On the overhead display the alphabet and a value for each letter. (A=l, B=2,….. & Z=26.)

With a calculator find the value of your name.

Instructional Strategies or Activities:

Students will use calculators to find the value of words. The goal of the activity is to find dollar words. In a dollar word all the letters add to exactly 100. Students use items around the room to begin activity and practice a running total with the calculator. When someone finds a dollar word, have a second student check for accuracy.

Summative Assessment:

Create a dollar word chart in the classroom. Each time someone finds a dollar word have the student write it on the chart and initial it. Keep track of dollar words for the year. See which student can find the most dollar words.
